About AMPI

AMPI’s objects are:

  • to be the leading authority on all matters relating to marine pilotage in the Australasian region;
  • to retain a current body of knowledge on all matters relating to marine pilotage including matters of law, technical matters, technological developments and contemporary practice;
  • to maintain control of marine pilots’ competency and training standards including entrance requirements, continuing professional education and continuing membership requirements;
  • to promote the professional and technical interests of marine pilots and marine pilotage through investigation, information and representation;
  • to enhance and protect the professional status of marine pilots;
  • to promote public awareness of a marine pilot’s role in protecting the environment;
  • to promote and maintain proper standards of performance of marine pilotage, marine pilot safety and associated matters of navigation;
  • to establish systems and standards for the recruitment and training of marine pilots;
  • to establish systems and standards for the delivery of marine pilotage services including standards for equipment and infrastructure;
  • to accredit organisations and courses for the training of marine pilots;
  • to accredit marine pilots through levels of membership that recognise professional and academic achievements as well as achievements in levels of training;
  • to review, research and report from time to time upon existing marine pilotage services and upon alternative systems of marine pilotage service, administration and operation;
  • to make representation on professional matters and to provide a body of authoritative opinion available to Parliament, commissions, marine courts of enquiry, committees, boards or other appropriate community bodies on marine pilotage, marine safety and associated matters;
  • to represent Australasian marine pilots internationally and to affiliate with the International Maritime Pilots Association and/or other appropriate body;
  • to encourage cooperation, meetings and correspondence with individuals, companies, associations, institutes, societies, government departments, environmental groups, news, media, unions or other groups having an interest in marine pilots and marine pilotage or associated matters whether for navigation or not;
  • to sponsor a professional journal and facilitate communication generally among Australasian marine pilots;
  • to participate in and promote conferences and seminars on marine pilotage and associated matters;
  • to arrange terms of reciprocity or affiliation with similar associations or organisations having mutual interests;
  • to liaise with overseas organisations concerned with issues relevant to marine pilotage;
  • to promote mutual trust and confidence between the Company and the Members in pursuit of these objects;
  • to promote the objects of the Company in any manner the Council considers appropriate, and to do things incidental or conducive to the attainment of these objects;
  • to assume the activities and assets of the Australian Marine Pilots Association Inc; and
  • to do all that is necessary to enable these objects to be achieved and to enable the Members to receive the benefit of these objects.
